Gelled oil systems were the first high-viscosity fluids used in hydraulic fracturing operations. A major advantage to this type of fluid is its compatibility with almost any formation type. There are some disadvantages in using gelled oils. Gelling problems can occur when using crude oils and the cost of using refined oils is very high. Also there are greater concerns regarding personnel safety andenvironmental impact, as compared to most water-fluids. In wells with high-permeability formations, the advantages of using gelled oils can outweigh their disadvantages, if safety and environmental issues can be resolved.
